Confirmation Program at Trinity
What is confirmation?
Confirmation is an opportunity for middle school students to grow in their faith and in their relationship with Jesus. Confirmation provides space for middle school students to reflect on what it means to be baptized children of God, to be members of Christ's church, and to be disciples of Christ. It also provides a safe environment for middle schoolers to grow, be challenged, question, doubt, wrestle, ask hard questions, and develop relationships with each other, with adults, and with God. At the end of the confirmation program, students are confirmed, meaning they publicly affirm their baptismal promises and are voting members of the congregation.
What does the confirmation program include?
The multi-year confirmation program is a combination of formal faith formation, relationship building, and fun! There is a classroom component including biblical literacy and content, what it means to be Lutheran, the creeds and prayers of the church, discipleship formation, and how all of this connects to our daily lives. Additionally, there are special social and service events, adult mentorship, family activities, worship participation, and more.
When does confirmation occur?
We conduct Confirmation classes from September through May. Confirmation classes are held on Wednesday evenings. Class typically begins at 4:30 PM, and ends 5:30 PM. Confirmation requirements include attendance at classes, as well as completion of outside assignments and activities.
What is the role of the congregation/pastor/family in confirmation?
Confirmation is a ministry of the congregation and larger Church and an important step in faith formation. As such, you can expect that classes are taught by the pastor but also that other adults are encouraged to participate in confirmation activities and support the program through a variety of ways, including serving as speakers, mentorship, and other participation. And we will be glad to celebrate with as you or your child reaches this important milestone! As for families, the reality is that your child is only engaging in confirmation programming and congregational worship for a few hours each week; the most crucial part of your middle schooler's faith formation occurs during their time with you, as they see the way that you love God and neighbor in your home. Therefore, part of confirmation involves offering activities ideas for faith formation within the family. You are on this journey together, and we the church journey alongside you!
